O uso da língua inglesa na maioria dos atuais e antigos países membros da Comunidade das Nações foi herdado da colonização britânica. Moçambique é uma exceção - embora o inglês seja amplamente falado lá, é uma ex-colônia portuguesa, que se juntou à Commonwealth em 1996. O inglês é falado como primeira ou segunda língua na maior parte da Commonwealth. Em alguns países, como Chipre e Malásia, não tem status oficial, mas é amplamente utilizado como língua franca.
